Abu Dhabi Airports, operator of the emirate’s five commercial airports, has announced the successful completion of a comprehensive rehabilitation project at Sir Bani Yas Airport (XSB).

The major improvement significantly strengthens the airport’s infrastructure to support the growing demand for tourism in Al Dhafra Region and ensure a higher standard of service for visitors to the island's renowned natural reserves.

Located 250 kilometres southwest of the Abu Dhabi coast in Al Dhafra Region, Sir Bani Yas Airport serves as the primary gateway to the island, a distinguished eco-tourism destination. The revamp project focused on key improvements across the airfield.

The runway, taxiways, and apron pavements have been fully reconstructed to ensure elevated safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, the airport’s lighting systems have undergone a complete revitalisation to enhance both night operations and visibility for ground personnel.

His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), said: "The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in aviation by investing in advanced infrastructure and adopting the highest international standards in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The recent rehabilitation at Sir Bani Yas Airport reflects this commitment, supporting seamless connectivity and reinforcing the country's vision for sustainable tourism and economic growth.

“Through strategic collaboration and continuous innovation, we remain dedicated to developing a resilient and future-ready aviation ecosystem. The ongoing modernisation of civil aviation capabilities across the UAE ensures world-class services, meeting the evolving demands of the industry while maintaining the highest levels of safety and operational excellence."

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “The completion of the rehabilitation works at Sir Bani Yas Airport is a significant milestone in our efforts to ameliorate the nation’s aviation infrastructure and is a direct result of effective collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority, highlighting our steadfast dedication to operational excellence. These enhancements will not only boost the airport's operational capacity but will also play a crucial role in supporting Al Dhafra Region’s continued growth as a key eco-tourism destination.”

The widening of the runway supports the airport to accommodate Code 4E aircraft operations bolstering the airport’s role in managing the growing influx of visitors to Sir Bani Yas Island.

The Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system has transitioned to high-performance LED technology as part of Abu Dhabi Airports’ sustainability initiatives. Additionally, a new Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) has been introduced, providing more effective management and control of the airfield’s lighting systems to enhance and ensure safe and compliant operations at Sir Bani Yas Airport.

The airport’s weather observation systems have been upgraded to state-of-the-art technology, ensuring more accurate and timely weather information to assist in operational planning and safety protocols, alongside the construction of new service and emergency roadways that will provide enhanced access during urgent situations.

Abu Dhabi Airports continues to invest in and enhance the aviation infrastructure of Al Dhafra Region, reinforcing its commitment to meeting the growing demand for tourism while making Sir Bani Yas Island more accessible. This rehabilitation project is a testament to the ongoing efforts to support eco-tourism and sustainable growth in the region, ensuring that visitors from around the world can experience the island’s unique beauty and wildlife with convenience, safety, and ease.
